On 16 May 2018, under new leadership, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy engaged in further talks with business associations and data protection authorities on the implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the 2018 Federal Data Protection Act. The aim is to support small and medium-sized enterprises in particular as they adapt their data processing to bring it into compliance with the data protection standards that came into force on 25 May 2018.

Said State Secretary from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community, Dr Helmut Teichmann: “There are only a few days left until the new data protection rules come into force on 25 May 2018. We want to help make sure that all those affected can exchange with one another and get the information they need in the days remaining until the new rules come into force. There are many questions that atill need to be discussed. That’s why we want to continue our dialogue beyond 25 May:”

Said State Secretary from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Ms Claudia Dörr-Voß: “From 25 May 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation will create a largely level playing field in the area of data protection across the EU. That is a great achievement. It is now of crucial importance that the General Regulation is implemented successfully. We especially want to support small and medium-sized enterprises in this.”

Today’s event at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy will particularly be used to discuss practical issues, especially those concerning the rights of the persons whose data is being processed, as well as the new obligations incumbent upon those responsible for processing it.

The EU General Data Protection Regulation will take effect on 25 May 2018 following a transitional period of two years. It will then form the main legal basis for data protection rules in all Member States within the European Union. Companies are required to adjust their business processes to the new legal standards by 25 May 2018.
